Akhil Gogoi to go on hunger strike on Magh Bihu for 24 hours
GUWAHATI: Peasant leader and RTI activist, Akhil Gogoi announced that he will go on a 24-hour hunger strike from January 14 on the eve of Magh Bihu to oppose the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Gogoi said that he will not celebrate the festival this year and won’t even eat anything on ‘Uruka’ as he will be observing a 24-hour hunger strike with the members of 70 organisations. The hunger strike will begin starting Monday afternoon to protest against the Bill.
He also added that until the controversial Bill is scrapped, protests across the state will continue as the BJP has plans to pass it in Rajya Sabha during the Budget session which is scheduled to commence on January 31.
Earlier, Gogoi was booked by police for sedition but was granted interim bail by the Gauhati High Court.
It should be noted that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 9 and it was stalled in the Rajya Sabha the very next day following strong opposition from the Congress and other parties.
