A major brawl took place at the heart of the city in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Two groups in a “drunken state” started fighting and the police patrolling party in the vicinity had to intervene.

In the premises of Anil Plaza two groups “violently” started fighting and the patrolling party was informed about the incident.

Local police sources said, “Police rushed at the spot to take stock of the situation but the crowd was very violent and even started misbehaving with the police.”

Officer in charge of Bhangagarh Police Station Bipin Medhi talking to G Plus said, “A suo moto case has been registered against Raiyan Farhad and others.” Medhi revealed that Farhad is the main accused as informed to police by eye witnesses and police will soon arrest him to investigate the matter.

Raiyan Farhad is the son of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) chairman Abdul Mannan Faruk.

The video of the incident which became viral on social media also revealed that a female party hopper was manhandled by local male police personnel.

Regarding the issue, Medhi said, “The police was chasing Raiyan, but the way out of the premises was blocked which irked her. She initially assaulted the police personnel and later one of the police personnel retaliated in anger. An enquiry will be ordered on the incident by senior officials, but no one has complained against the police yet,” he said.

Police is planning to write to the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (M) to stop giving permissions to bars for serving liquor till 12 am in the night.

The case has been registered at Bhangagarh Police Station under case no - 47/2018 under section 143/294/353/427 of Indian Penal Code. Some of the sections are non bailable and Medhi said, “Raiyan and his friends will be surely arrested.” Raiyan had also allegedly misbehaved with the police and main accused of the incident, said local police.
