Assam Congress MLA, Abdul Khaleque favoured giving temporary shelter to “persecuted” Rohingya Muslims in order to save them from the ongoing massacre in Myanmar.

While addressing a press conference, Congress legislator Abdul Khaleque said, “We have given shelter to The Dalai Lama, the Chakmas, refugees from East Pakistan. In the same way, we should give shelter to the Rohingyas. But that does not mean we should give citizenship to them.” Khaleque said the refugees should be issued identity cards and given shelter in designated camps.

He further said India should take up with Pakistan and Bangladesh the issue of persecution of Hindu minorities in the neighbouring countries.

The Rohingyas Muslim minority in the Rakhine state of Myanmar have been fleeing to Bangladesh and India amid reports of alleged ethnic purging and persecution.

Some 16,500 Rohingya from Myanmar are registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees(UNHCR) in India. About 40,000 are said to be staying illegally.
