GUWAHATI: A report titled ‘An analytical glimpse on road accidents in Assam’ published by state police has reported that in the entire northeastern region, Assam recorded the highest number of road accident occurrences last year.

The report was available to PTI on Wednesday, August 28. It stated that a total of 2,966 people were killed and 7,373 were injured in 8,248 accidents last year.

Assam ranks at the 16th position in India for the number of road accidents. 30 people were killed and 89 were injured in every 100 accidents in the state, according to the report.

Further, it stated that in a particular day, eight people were killed and 20 injured in road accidents on an average.

Director General of Police, Kuladhar Saikia said that the lack of knowledge of road safety rules and negligent and callous driving are few of the main reasons for these accidents.

Saikia also mentioned that a lot of these accidents could be prevented.

Road accidents have risen by 15 percent in 2018 compared to 2017 and fatalities have increased by six percent and injuries increased by 19 percent.

It should be noted that 48 percent of these accidents happened on national highways and 26 percent took place on state highways and other roads.
