GUWAHATI: The state education department is yet to notify schools on the centre’s directive to limit the weight of school bags in all schools.

The union human resource development ministry has put a weight limit on the school bags of students of all classes. Further, the centre issued an order to all states and union territories asking them to ensure that students of classes I and II are not given any homework.

G Plus spoke to the district elementary education officer Buli Gogoi Bhuyan who said that they have not been given any circular from the higher ups regarding the same.

“We have not received any notification from the department regarding the weight limit of the school bags,” said Bhuyan.

On the other hand, headmistress of Sanskiriti the Gurukul School in Guwahati, Anita Varma, told G Plus that even they have not been officially informed about the centre’s decision.

“We are a day boarding school from class 1 to 12 so the students have their own desks. So they don’t carry all their books and notebooks home. As far as home assignments are concerned, we anyway don’t give the students of class 1 and 2 home assignments. I don’t think that any other schools have also received the order yet,” she said.

She further said that if the government of Assam will implement the central HRD ministry’s rules, all schools will get the orders.

As per the official order, the HRD ministry has “instructed all the states union territories to formulate guidelines to regulate the teaching of subjects and weight of school bags in accordance with the government of India instructions.”

Additionally, the order states that students should not be asked to bring any additional books in order to ensure that the weight of the bag does not exceed the prescribed limit.

The weight of the school bags for classes I and II should be 1.5 kg, while for classes III to V the weight should not exceed 2-3 kg, for classes VI to VIII the weight should be 4 kg and for classes VIII to IX 4.5 kg and for class X the weight should not exceed 5 kg.
