Guwahati to Host 6 Major Events between December to February

Guwahati, a major riverine port city and one of the fastest growing cities in India, situated on the south bank of the Brahmaputra in recent years have become one of the most sought after destination when it comes to hosting an event or being a home ground to sports enthusiast.

Here are the few High Profile Events coming up:

1. ISL (currently underway)

NorthEast United FC will return to action to play against Mumbai City FC on November 27, 2019 at the Sarusajai stadium. The hosts are still unbeaten in the league, a run they would like to keep rolling.

The visitors, in contrast, have had a difficult start to the campaign with two humbling defeats in their last two matches, which sees them just two places off the bottom of the table.


2. Indo-Japan Meet (December)

The 14th edition of India-Japan annual Summit is likely to be held in Guwahati wherein Prime  Ministers of both the countries are said to be participating in the event.

Although the dates for the two-day summit have not been officially announced, but the summit is expected to take place in December 15-17.

The Indian side are now waiting for an approval from the Japanese counterpart for the confirmation of the venue. While Guwahati is reportedly the first choice, Odisha capital Bhubaneshwar has emerged as the top contender.

It is to be mentioned that the two Prime Ministers, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, are also scheduled to go on a cruise on the Brahmaputra River besides attending the cultural evening.


3. Guwahati Theatre Festival (December)

Guwahati’s English weekly, G Plus announced the fourth season of the Guwahati Theatre Festival (GTF) which shall be held from 6th December- 8th December 2019, at Pragjyoti ITA, Machkhowa in Guwahati. 

Prominent personalities from the Indian film industry like Amol Palekar, Rakesh Bedi, Avijit Dutt, Anant Mahadevan and Dilnaz Irani are among the ones to be featured in the fourth edition of the festival. 

GTF will present 3 nationally acclaimed plays during the 3 days.

The festival will feature Rakesh Bedi’s Hindi play ‘Patte Khul Gaye’ featuring veteran theatre personality Avijit Dutt, Anant Mahadevan, and others on an opening day. 

The second day of the festival will have the bilingual play, ‘The devil wears Bataa’ featuring Danesh Irani, Sajeel Parakh, Dilnaz Irani, Darius Shroff, and others and directed by Meherzad Patel. 

On the final day, is a brand new thriller play in Hindi - ‘Kusoor’ (The mistake), which features veteran actor Amol Palekar.


4. India Vs Sri Lanka T20 (January)

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited Sri Lanka to participate in a three-match T20I series.

The three-match T20I series will be held in India starting January 5, 2020.  

The first of the 3 matches will be held on January 5 in Barsapara Cricket Stadium which is officially known as Dr Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium.

It is to be mentioned that the official team is yet to be announced.

Confirming this news, the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket announced the schedule for the islanders’ forthcoming tour of India in which Sri Lanka confirmed its participation in the tournament.


5. Khelo India (January)

The third edition of the Khelo India Youth Games will be hosted by Guwahati in January 2020.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal while chairing the first high-powered review meeting in Janata Bhawan in Guwahati said that the state machinery, including sports bodies should make the best innovation for successfully organising the games in the city.

CM Sonowal asked Director of Sports Authority of India, Assam, Subhash Basumatary to make a complete assessment of all sports venues including the available infrastructure and take up the refurbishing work at the earliest.  


6. Filmfare Awards (February)

The Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), November 25 with the Times of India group to organize Filmfare Awards in Guwahati.

The 65th Filmfare will be held in February 15, 2020 in Guwahati, however, the venue is yet to be confirmed.

Speaking in the event ATDC chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah said that the Times of India group will contribute 50% of revenue earned from the Filmfare tickets will go to the Chief Minister’s relief fund.


7. IPL (Tentatively April) 

Rajasthan Royals (RR) is set to play minimum 2 IPL matches at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in next IPL season in 2020.

The owner of RR Manoj Bedale announced this in a press conference held in Guwahati and also said that soon the franchise is going to set up a cricket academy in Assam.

Among others ACA secretary Devajit Saikia were also present in the meet.

In the 2019 edition of IPL, Assam cricket prodigy Riyan Parag was also part of the squad.
