AASU stages protest against migration of minorities
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a statewide protest on Tuesday against the move of Centre to regularize the entry of religious minorities of Bangladesh to Assam.
ASSU, that led a six year long anti foreigner movement in the State from 1979-1985, has announced strong protest and warned of the agitation across the State, if the Centre makes any sort of attempt to turn the Assam Accord null and void, or allow illegal immigrants to settle in Assam. The union has strongly demanded that during a time when the indigenous people of the State are already facing so much of problems, the Centre should not anyway think of making the entry of Bangladeshi in the State legal.
Commenting on the issue, General Sec of ASSU, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “Assam is at a crucial juncture today. While the indigenous communities are crying for protection from illegal influx, the Centre wants to regularize the entry of immigrants from Bangladesh on religious lines. We protest the move and demand the immigrants, who sneaked into the State after 1971, to not be allowed to settle in Assam anyway.
