Assam: APSC Introduces Transgender as an Option in the Gender Category, 42 Aspirants Apply
GUWAHATI: Assam becomes the first state in the country to introduce a 'transgender' option in the gender category of the civil service examination form.
42 aspirants of the transgender community of Assam have filled the form this year, applying for the posts of ACS junior grade and other allied services.
In the recently conducted application procedure of the Combined Competitive (Preliminary) Examinations that are to be held in 2021, APSC prov
ided a separate category for transgenders.
Appreciating the step taken by the state commission to uplift the transgender community, Swati Bidhan Baruah, associate vice-chairperson of the Assam State Transgender Welfare Board told G Plus, "It's a much-welcomed development. But only doing so wouldn't be of much help if special steps are not included. I have written to the Commission to secure reservation for the community and also provide special standard operating procedures (SOP) so that others do not misuse this provision."
Baruah further added that the names of the 42 transgender candidates who have applied for the recruitment process are unknown and she will be writing to the APSC commission seeking details of them.
