My parents are from Assam. I was born in Guwahati but as my parents worked in Surat that's why I shifted the when I was three months old. As I also speak Assamese at home, celebrate every Assamese festival, the is no reason why I should not be an Assamese. In an India which is increasingly grind culturally integrated, one can hold multiple identities. In my case, my genes and culture at my home makes me Assamese while the environment where I grew up and people with whom I interacted while growing up make me a Gujarati. But each of the identity hold equal importance per se.
