Assam Govt Reveals Who Will Receive COVID-19 Vaccine First
GUWAHATI: The Assam government has revealed the priority for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccine as and when it becomes available for the public use.
It has reiterated that there is no public vaccine "currently" but is preparing a list of people who will receive the vaccines first once it is rolled out for the masses.
State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that around 70 lakh people will be the early recip
ients of the vaccine in Assam. "As of now, there is no COVID-19 vaccine. 5 vaccines are in 2nd or 3rd levels of trials in the country and we are preparing to vaccinate about 70 lakh people in the state in the first go," the Minister shared in the press conference.
As per the minister, PM Narendra Modi had a video call conference with all chief ministers of the states and had listed four priority categories recipients. Accordingly, the list is being prepared, which would be around 70 lakh in the state of Assam.
As per a highly ranked source in the state health department, the four categories are: firstly the healthcare workers, second are the frontline workers including police and the paramilitary, third is the people who are more than 50 years age and fourth are people who are less than 50 but with co-morbidities, meaning having a disease such as diabetes.
This has been considered as a layer by layer approach amounting to 70 lakh people approximately out of the 3.2 crore population of the state, that will constitute the primary candidates for the vaccine.
