Assam: Only Digital Payments Allowed in Tolls Starting January 1, 2021
GUWAHATI: Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs Nitin Gadkari had earlier announced that FASTags will be mandatory for vehicles from January 1, 2021.
With this all states have geared up to abide by the new rule. In Assam, where FASTags have not been prevalent till date, commuters will now have to adapt to this new rule.
Alok Kumar, Director of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) informed G Plus that preparations are under way in
all toll plazas of the state.
"We are also installing Point of Sale (POS) locations at the Toll Plazas. The Chief Secretary of Assam has been requested to ask the Transport and other concerned department to help install FASTags in the windshield of vehicles," he said.
Kumar added, "No cash will be accepted from 1st Jan, 2021 and vehicles that do not have the tags will have to purchase a card to make payments at the tolls itself."
All banks have been appraised to facilitate sale of the FASTags. "The tags can also be procured from Amazon and PayTM online," informed the NHAI Director.
With this move, the authorities hope to prevent traffic congestion in the highways as commuters will not have to stop at toll plazas for cash payments.
