GUWAHATI: Assam recorded the highest number of crimes against women in the year 2018, according to the latest statistical data published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Rate of crime against women in Assam stood at 166 for 2018, almost three times the national average rate of 58.8 and marginally above Delhi’s crime rate of 149.6. Haryana was placed third on the list of shame with a crime rate of 107.5 against women, followed by Odisha at 91.3.

In 2017, the rate of crime against women in Assam was 143.3 against the national figure of 57.9. Delhi came second with a rate of 133.3, followed by Telangana at 94.7 and Odisha at 94.5.

Crime Rate is calculated as the number of crimes recorded per one lakh population.

Assam has been witnessing a year-on-year increase in crime rate. In 2016, 20,896 cases of crimes against women were registered in the state. The number increased to 23,082 in 2017 and further to 27,728 in 2018, which was 7.3% of all crimes against women in India that year.

Assam recorded the highest number of rapes (a total of 66) in India, followed by Madhya Pradesh (41) and Uttar Pradesh (41). In total, 296 cases of rape were reported across the country.

Hi Nehal, I would not entirely agree with your assessment of the statistics related to rape: read my response below. To verify refer to NCRB 2018 data at the link provided below. Page. 202 provides statistics related to Rape. The rate (defined as number of rapes per 1 lakh people) in Assam is 9.9 whereas other states are as follows: Delhi : 13.3 Chandigarh: 16.1 Andamans & Nicobar: 16.1 Chattishgarh: 14.7 Madhya Pradesh: 13.8 Rajasthan: 11.7 Uttarakhand: 10.4 http://ncrb.gov.in/StatPublications/CII/CII2018/pdfs/Crime%20in%20India%202018%20-%20Volume%201.pdf Also when you quote headline numbers for overall crimes against women, it is better to provide analytical data to explain why it is high. For example, the two crimes that seem to be contributing to the over all high number for Assam are 11,136 (Sc 498 A, Cruety by husband/ relatives) and 6401 (Kidnapping/ Abduction of Women). The authorities and the civil society should investigate why that is happening and what interventions are necessary to reduce those. Note: your mention of 68 cases of reported rape is incorrect for reasons stated above. That number is for associated Murder. It is another area that civil society and the authorities should investigate and put remedies in place. Regards, Mon
