Brahmaputra Aamantran Abhiyan: Team Docks at Dhubri after Month Long Rafting Expedition
GUWAHATI: The 29-day long Brahmaputra Aamantran Abhiyan, a rafting expedition on the entire route of the Brahmaputra River in India concluded on 20th January at Assameralga near the Indo-Bangladesh Border.
The expedition was organised by the Brahmaputra Board under Ministry of Jal Shakti, government of India. The rafting team led by Suhashini Shekhewat with NDRF members successfully docked at the last destination point at Assameralga yesterday afternoon.
The main objective of the Brahmaputra Aamantran Abhiyan was to reach out to the younger generation to inculcate the concept of "Living with the River". A team of experts also conducted a combined scientific data collection and analysis of river water quality, river sediment, river bank erosion and fish habitat along the entire route of the expedition.
The rafting expedition was flagged off on 23rd December 2020 at Gelling in Arunachal Pradesh by Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Kiren Rijiju.
A programme to commemorate the success of the expedition will be held today, on 21st January, at Natasurjya Phani Sarma Bhawan, in Goalpara District Assam. The programme will be attended by Phani Bhusan Choudhury, State Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Pension and Public Grievances, as chief guest. Other dignitaries scheduled to attend the programme include Rajiv Yadav, chairman of the Brahmaputra Board, Varnali Deka, Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara, Commandant of 1st Bn NDRF R. S. Gill, Prof. Arup Sarma of IIT Guwahati, vice chairman of Brahmaputra Board P. M. Scott. and the rafting team.
Various institutions which played an active role in the Brahmaputra Aamantran Abhiyan and the rafting team will be felicitated in the function. Winning students of Goalpara area who participated in the Debate and Essay Writing competition on "Living with the River" will also be felicitated in the function.
