Munna Prasad Gupta appointed as new Commissioner of Police, Guwahati
GUWAHATI: Deepak Kumar, who was the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati has been shunted out and the post will be taken over by Munna Prasad Gupta, IPS (RR-1995). The shunting out of Kumar is being attributed to the current boiling scenario in the city which is witnessing huge protests by the general public against the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in both the houses of Parliament on 10th and 11th December last.
Deepak Kumar took charge from Pradip Chandra Saloi retired on
superannuation on December 31, 2018. Munna Prasad Gupta served as the Inspector General, Special Protection Group (SPG) and hails from Assam’s Golaghat district.
It is worth mentioning here that the second day of protests on 11th December went completely out of the control of the police and the city administration whereby the city witnessed vandalism and hooliganism of frightening proportions where a great amount of public property was damaged – mainly on the arterial GS Road. Road divider railings were damaged besides government buses and other vehicles were set on fire.
