COVID-19 Vaccines Not Yet Approved for Sale in Open Market
GUWAHATI: The COVID-19 vaccines will not be available in the open market until the trial data of both vaccines - the Covishield and Covaxin, are approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI), the country's apex drug regulator. This was informed by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan to The Times of India.
Saying that the government will currently be focusing on vaccinating people only on priority basis, Bhusan added, "As of now, no time frame can
be set for the rollout of Covid -19 vaccines in the open market. The government’s focus now is only on covering the priority population in the next seven-eight months.”
“The market authorization comes after the stipulated follow-up on all the trial phases,” he added.
Market authorization is mandatory to sell vaccines in the open market. However, no such authorization has been provided to any of the vaccines currently in use.
