Foreign Cigarettes Worth Rs. 2.5 Lakh Seized In Guwahati
GUWAHATI: Around 330 packs of foreign cigarettes were seized by the Government Railway Police in Guwahati Railway Station on October 12.
According to reports, the contraband cigarettes have been seized from Yesvantpur Express.
In the meanwhile, the GRP has detained two persons identified as Arbind Kumar and C Kartik in connection to the case.
Reportedly, the cigarettes were smuggled into India via Moreh in Manipur.
They are valued at over Rs 2.5 lakh informed sources.
It is to be mentioned that the illegal cigarette trade comprising of internationally smuggled and locally manufactured, tax-evaded cigarettes accounts for as much as 1/4th of the cigarette industry in India.
Based on the current tax rates on cigarettes, it is estimated that the Government loses Rs. 13,000 crore per annum due to the illegal cigarette trade.
