Gaurav Gogoi Bats for Polarising United Ahom Identity to Unseat BJP in Upper Assam
The troika of Gogois - Gaurav, Lurin and Akhil are trying to churn out a new polarising political alternative in Assam before elections based on their identity of being Ahoms.
Election time throws up some interesting combinations and theories and this one is gaining traction ahead of the Assam assembly elections.
If the signals coming out from the election battlefield are anything to go by than united Ahom sentiment is likely to be on display during the forthcoming electio
n much more than any previous elections.
Gaurav Gogoi who is on an election campaign in upper and middle Assam in Golaghat had said that the combination of three Gogoi’s – Gaurav, Lurin and Akhil will overthrow BJP from the seat of power.
Clearly, reigniting united Ahom identity during election time is an obvious polarising tactic to garner votes to counter BJPs Hindutva plank.
It may be mentioned here that BJP’s top election strategist, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had said during the CAA protests that he is not scared of junior, middle or senior Gogoi referring to Lurin, Akhil and Late Tarun Gogoi who had led the protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, now an Act known as the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA.
Upper Assam was the epicentre of the anti-CAA protests. AJP led by Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Raijor Dal led by jailed activist Akhil Gogoi were born centering around the issue and both the parties are banking heavily on the potent anti-immigrant sentiment.
According to 2011 Census, there are 2 million Ahoms in Assam and they have a proud history of defeating the Mughals. The Ahoms had ruled their kingdom for nearly six centuries until 1826.
