GMC’s Unplanned Cleaning of Drains causes Public Harassment on B. Barooah Road

G Plus News | March 10, 2018 16:01 hrs

It seems that the GMC has finally woken up from their proverbial siesta and is currently running contractual work to clean up drains across different parts of the city.

However, the cleaning work on B. Barooah road has met with stiff complaints from the public. Below is a glimpse from the work on B. Barooah Road (western side from Ulubari Chariali to Solapara Road):

“It is likely that Guwahatians have seen work like this across the city before. But what is common is that this gunk from the drain gets picked up, is thrown on the roadside and is left like that to dry,” said Kaushik Das, a local resident of the area.

Added to that Kaushik said, “This gunk will not get picked up and apart from the fact that it emits a foul stench in the entire place, it also breeds mosquitoes and diseases. We have a hard time staying home and or travelling in the area because of this.”

Rahul Goswami, a local who goes to work on B. Barooah Road said, “I cannot park my car anywhere. B Barooah Road is already hard pressed for parking. This unplanned work makes it more difficult for us. The GMC doesn’t expect us to park our cars on the filth does it? Why don’t they wrap up such work on weekends so that the public isn’t harassed on weekdays?”

G Plus reached out to Dipak Sarma, the contractor of the GMC work who said that, “because of people parking their cars, we were unable to pick up the gunk. We cannot pick it up if there are cars. This material extracted from the drain today will only be picked up only tomorrow.”
