Goalpara SP convicted for custodial torture
Superintendent of Police Amitava Sinha was on June 21 found guilty of custodial torture of a murder accused by the Kamrup (Metro) Sessions and District Court here.
The Additional Sessions Judge Deepak Changkakati has pronounced a judgement of two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 to Sinha, who is currently an SP at Goalpara.
“Non-payment of the fine amount will lead to an extended term of three years to the convict,” the judgement read.
Sinha was accused of excessive torturing Gurmeet Singh, an accused of a murder case of 2012 during police custody on 2013 at the Basistha police station on 2013. Sinha, was the additional SP (crime) back then.
Singh was arrested from Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the murder of a businessman Jeet Singh.
Among other charges, Sinha was also slammed with charges of extorting confessions during custody from a murder accused under Section 326 and 331 of the Indian Penal Code.
Sinha was later today granted one month’s bail to appeal before the High Court.
