Guwahati: ATM card cloning gang busted, 2 Haryana youths arrested
GUWAHATI: The city police has finally managed to get hold of a ATM card cloning gang. In an operation near Guwahati airport, the Azara police nabbed two members of a gang who were in the business of making fake ATM cards to loot people.
The arrested duo from Hisar, Haryana, has been identified as Manjit Singh (22) and Pravin Kumar (20). They have admitted of looting money from various accounts in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana by cloning ATM cards.
The police informed that the two youths had come to the city to start the business and were searching for potential victims. Once a card is swiped by the machine, details of the cardholder get recorded in it. Later, with the help of software a new duplicate card is made on the basis of the recorded details. The gang then use the duplicate card to take out money from the account. The card holders were in for a surprise as even though they were in possession of the cards, the money was still being withdrawn from their accounts through the cloned cards. The gang had already collected details of 12 card holders in Guwahati.
According to the Azara police, at around 8:45 PM, acting on a tip off, a police team apprehended the duo while they were on their way to the airport. They were supposed to board an Indigo flight to New Delhi.
The police recovered one laptop, two ATM swipe machines, 43 blank ATM cards, ATM cards of various banks, 3 cell phones, Rs. 21,641 in cash and a number of SIM cards and objectionable materials from the duo.
