GUWAHATI: Every households and commercial establishments in Guwahati are expected to receive pipe gas connection after 2020, once the construction of the new pipeline between Guwhati and Barauni in Bihar is completed by December next year.

In order to supply piped natural gas in the city, Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL), Oil India Ltd (OIL) and GAIL Gas Ltd (GGL) have signed a joint venture agreement on July 11.

As part of the agreement, the three companies have formed a consortium to develop and implement the City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks in Guwahati and in Kamrup (M) district.

Apart from Guwahati, the CGD networks will cover four other districts in Assam in the first phase. The districts include Kamrup (R), Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj.

Under the project, around 4.16 lakh households are set to be connected with piped natural gas (PNG) in the five districts. In addition, 72 CNG stations will be set up in these districts.

Of those CNG stations, 51 will be set up in Kamrup (M).

The PNG project, which will be set up in Kamrup (M) and Kamrup (R) districts, along with the CNG stations in Kamrup (M) district will be developed at an investment of around Rs 1,200 crore.
