Guwahati traffic cops suspended for misconduct
GUWAHATI: A complaint was filed against two traffic constables from Gorchuk police station on Wednesday for misconduct towards a truck driver and extortion of money.
The complaint has forced the police department to set up an internal inquiry on the matter and suspend both the constables until further notice.
On the evening of May 7, truck driver Ajijar Rahman along with his brother Aminur Hussain reached Guwahati with their truck laden with print papers of a nationa
l daily when they were stopped at a traffic point near Gorchuk and were subjected to verbal abuse by a traffic police constable.
The driver had allegedly crossed a 'No Entry' point and so the police jumped inside the moving vehicle and started to use cuss words. When Hussain started to film the police's behavior, his phone was snatched away and they were both taken to police station.
“At Gorchuk police station, the verbal abuse continued and I was also hit by another police constable. They snatched both our phones, the key of the truck and also took all our documents including my license,” informed the driver.
He further informed that they were asked to pay Rs 3000 as fine for violation of No Entry, which is way more than the actual fine, and Rs 5000 as bribe for both the phones.
The drivers, who hail from Alipurduar, came to a settlement by paying Rs 1500 as fine and Rs 2900 as bribe for the phones.
The next day, a complaint was registered with the police department and quick action was taken.
Traffic police officials said the constables have been suspended and the money extorted as bribe has been returned to the driver within 24 hours. "A department inquiry has been ordered in the matter and I'm personally conducting it,” ADCP Traffic Pranjit Bora informed G Plus.
