GUWAHATI: With over 60 countries questioning the origin of the Sars-CoV-2 virus which causes the COVID-19, India joined in on the demand for an inquiry to identify how the virus transmitted from animals to humans according to a draft resolution proposed for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual meet.

The inquiry led by the European Union and Australia will be pushed by India which has articulated its stand on the outbreak initiating from China’s Wuhan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously indicated the country’s stand at the G20 summit in March where he backed the need for WHO reforms with transparency and accountability.

China has been accused of concealing crucial information about the origin and spread of virus in its early days which is said to have led to the worldwide spread of the disease.

The draft resolution backed by India asks the WHO director general to work with the World Organisation for Animal Health to conduct “scientific and collaborative field missions” and “identify the zoonotic source of the virus and the route of introduction to the human population, including the possible role of intermediate hosts,” without directly targeting China or Wuhan.

The confrontation today, where countries will push the draft resolution is speculated to target China, which has come under global scrutiny over the pandemic that has affected over 48 lakh lives with over 3 lakh deaths worldwide.
