KVS agrees to teach Assamese as a regular subject during school hours

GUWAHATI: After much contention, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has finally agreed to keep Assamese language as a regular subject which will be taught for approximately 2-3 periods per week.

This announcement came after top CBSE officials and Assam Sahitya Sabha held a meeting in regard to this issue.

Earlier, a CBSE circular had stressed that if at least 15 or more students opt to study an additional language, it may be taken up by respective schools beyond school hours, for which teaching staff and other facilities will be made available.

Assam Sahitya Sabha has been opposing KVS’ move to make Assamese language irrelevant in its schools. The former has also threatened to demonstrate democratic protest against the later’s move.

Deputy Commissioner of KVS, Chandradip Nilap has informed the Assamese literary body that this decision of including Assamese as a regular subject can only be handled or solved by the Central government.
