Manohari Gold tea sells for Rs 50,000/kg at tea auction in Guwahati
GUWAHATI: Manohari Gold tea from Assam’s Dibrugarh district was sold at a whopping Rs 50,000 per kilogram at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre on Tuesday, July 30.
As per reports, this is said to be the highest price fetched for tea at a public auction. Manjilal Maheshwari of Sourabh Tea Traders from Guwahati bid the highest price at the tea auction and bought two kilograms of the Manohari Gold tea.
In July 2018, the same tea created a world record after being sold for Rs 39,001 per kilogram. However, this record was broken by the Golden Needle variety from Arunachal Pradesh’s Donyi Polo Tea Estate which fetched a price of Rs 40,000 a kilo.
Reportedly, the owner of Manohari Tea Estate in Dibrugarh, Rajan Lohia said that only five kilos of the special variety of tea was produced by them this year as the weather was not supportive.
He said since the tea is made of buds and not leaves, and the process was a tedious one.
