A new vaccine that protects against COVID-19 is nearly 95% effective, early data from US company Moderna shows.
Moderna Inc, one of the leading companies in the COVID-19 vaccine has claimed "95% effectiveness of its new vaccine."
As reported by Reuters, the company says its experimental vaccine is 94.5% effective in preventing the COVID-19 based on interim data from a late-stage clinical trial.
An interim analysis released on Mon
day, and based on 95 patients with confirmed Covid infections, found the candidate vaccine has an efficacy of 94.5%. The company said it now plans to apply to the US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration, for emergency-use authorisation in the coming weeks. In the analysis, 90 of the patients received the placebo with the remaining five the vaccine.
Moderna says it is a "great day" and they plan to apply for approval to use the vaccine in the next few weeks.
However, this is still early data and key questions remain unanswered.
