Union Tourism Secretary, Rashmi Varma while attending the 6th International Tourism Mart in Guwahati said that 92 new routes under UDAN scheme will be opened in the Northeast which is expected to give a major flip to air connectivity to the entire Northeast region. She also announced that the Tourism department is looking at inter-regional and thematic packages to harness the resources cutting across state boundaries.

The Union Secretary was also of the opinion that the fact that ea
ch northeastern state has its own unique identity, itcalls for an aggressive marketing strategy in the region.
“The region witnessed 77 lakh domestic and 1.6 lakh international tourists last year. The growth rate, at 5.2 per cent, is encouraging. But we can easily double the footfall if we can tell the world about the tourism products the region has to offer,” she said.

She further said, “We are looking at inter-regional packages and thematic packages over the existing ones. We can also have packages with neighbouring countries. We can give them an option, that when they are visiting a neighbouring country, they can also visit the Northeast.”
