Northeast Women are yet to be Fully Empowered: Rekha Sharma NCW chief
GUWAHATI: The women of the northeastern region are yet to be fully empowered even though they are now actively involved in economic activities, according to Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission of Women.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the one-day seminar, ‘Empowering Women Through Entrepreneurship’ in Shillong, she explained that women are often denied property rights and are not allowed to freely spend the money they earn themselves. However, to counter these ills, she suggested that entrepreneurial enterprise can help women to empower themselves and go from job seekers to job providers.
She also added that to focus on nation building, women must be included in this conversation as ignoring 50 percent of the population is never the answer.
