Post controversy, Papri Banerjee gets Interim Anticipatory Bail by Gauhati High Court
GUWAHATI: Assistant professor at Icon College Papri Banerjee, who went missing after her controversial post on Pulwama attack, has been granted interim anticipatory bail by the Gauhati High Court.
An FIR was filed against Banerjee in connection to a Facebook post she wrote regarding the Pulwama attack. However, she went missing shortly after the FIR was filed.
She was granted interim anticipatory bail by the Gauhati High Court in both the Chandmari and Silchar PS Cases. She has been directed to appear and cooperate before the investigating officer within three days in both the cases.
Her advocate Sanjay Mitra appeared for her before the Gauhati High Court and was assisted by P Mazumdar.
She was called to Chandmari police station for questioning on February 16 and was asked to come again on February 18 for questioning, but she did not show up.
She ran away from her residence on the morning of February 18. Her guardians had alleged that she has left behind a letter stating that she wants to spend some time alone, away from all the threats. However, they have failed to produce the letter to the police.
In the meantime, the police has been in search of her whereabouts and police officials informed that she has violated norms by not showing up on the time of questioning.
Post the Pulwama attack that shook the nation, Papri Banerjee took to Facebook to express her views. In her post, while Papri condemned the attack, she also criticized the Indian Army and their “atrocities” on civilians in the Kashmir Valley.
She was suspended from college with immediate effect for posting objectionable remarks on Facebook.
Papri Banerjee’s post on social media regarding the Pulwama terror attack gained massive traction. Not only was she criticized for her objectionable remarks on the Indian Army personnel, she was also bashed for her previous posts which were termed “anti-national” and “anti-social” by many. The post was widely shared across social media platforms by netizens demanding the police to take strict action against her.
