Prime accused in Barpeta Muslim man assault case arrested
GUWAHATI: The prime accused in an incident that took place in Barpeta, where a group of Muslim men were beaten up and forced to chant slogans like ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Pakistan Murdabad’, was arrested in Guwahati on the night of June 21.
As per reports, the accused has been identified as Deboijit Deka who is a member of Sri Ram Sena- a right wing organisation. Deka hails from Guwahati’s Jalukbari area.
Deka was arrested by a joint team of Guwahati and Barpeta police.
The incident came to light after a video of the purported attack and the forcible chanting of slogans went viral on social media.
The victims stated that a group of men claiming to be members of the right-wing group stopped an autorickshaw in Barpeta town and started beating the people travelling in it and forced them to chant slogans.
According to reports, two FIRs were filed against the right-wing organisation and its founder by All Assam Minority Students'' Union (AAMSU) and North-East Minorities Students' Union (NEMSU).
