Probe against popcorn vendor at FIFA venue
Following report of detection of mosquito repellent coil in a popcorn packet sold inside the FIFA U 17 World Cup venue in Guwahati on Wednesday, the local authorities temporarily closed the production and packaging unit of the food supplier of the city on Thursday. The Kamrup (metro) Deputy Commissoner Dr. M. Angamuthu formed a four member committee to look into the allegation of detection of mosquito repellent coil in a popcorn packet sold by the authorised vendor to spectators during a match.
During the enquiry it was found that a firm named Standard Sweets and Caterers, New Delhi awarded the contract to one Rahul Kumar, a resident of Thakur Pukar, Kolkata. Rahul Kumar further sublet it to one Bipul Saha, a resident of Barasat, Kolkata. Bipul Saha engaged one Mani Mohan Biswas also resident of Kolkata for manufacturing, packaging and selling of popcorn in the FIFA match venue.The enquiry team visited their packaging facility at the rented house located at Kalimandir Path opposite Hockey Stadium, Guwahati. The owner of the house is Jatin Ch. Bora. The enquiry team collected samples of all food material for further analysis and also sealed the packaging facility for non-compliance of food safety norms. Further action will be taken based on the food analysis report.
