Sanitary napkin dispensing machine installed in Guwahati school
GUWAHATI: A sanitary napkin dispensing machine was installed at Banikanta Memorial Higher Secondary School located in Rehabari area of the city. A total of 210 girls from classes 6 to 12 are enrolled in the school.
The machine was installed in the common room of the school, sponsored by members of Leo Club of Gauhati Girls who have also taken up the responsibility to refill the machine with sanitary napkins on a monthly basis.
Earlier, the organization had installed another sanitary napkin dispensing machine at Biswanath School located in Latima Village in Nalbari district of Assam.
"These projects are part of our initiative, 'Awareness upon Sanitary Napkins.' We wish to make sanitary napkins available for more and more women and break this taboo in society," expressed Ruchi Kedia, president of Leo Club of Gauhati Girls.
Most times, the unavailability of sanitary pads, inadequate sanitation and absence of separate toilets for girls in schools are just some of the reasons that cause a huge impact on girls' attendance in school and it also one of the major reasons for girls dropping out of school.
By making sanitary napkins easily available to girls and helping them lead a disease free life, this initiative is expected to improve girls’ attendance in school.
