Sonowal claims False Propaganda behind Protests
GUWAHATI, Dec 12 : As protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, (CAB) engulfed the state, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today claimed that certain sections of people were spreading misinformation and false propaganda under the pretext of CAB.
He urged for peace and restraint among the general public, and assured that the government was committed to protect the identity of the Assamese people.
Talking to a TV news agency, Sonowal said, "Some sections of people are trying to aggravate the situation by spreading misinformation. They are using the CAB and misleading the people by saying that 10 ml or 15 ml people will come due to it. This is false propaganda. I request the people not to believe this misinformation."
"Those who are spreading these are trying to destablise the peace and tranquillity of the state," he added.
In a separate interview to AIR, the CM further assured that people should not be worried about the CAB and culture, language as well as political and land rights of the people of Assam will be guarded by implementing the Assam Accord.
He said the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister have already stated that, the Centre is committed to implement Clause Six of the Assam Accord, which will provide constitutional safeguards to the people of the state.
Assam has been in the grip of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, (CAB), with indefinite curfew in Guwahati and Dibrugarh, Army called in at multiple towns of the state and internet services suspended.
