Brahmaputra and Barak Valley divided over Citizenship Bill: Jagdish Mukhi
GUWAHATI: Speaking at the Governor’s Conclave convened by the President in New Delhi on Tuesday, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi said that the Centre is seized of the matter arising out of concern over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and it will not take any decision without first discussing it with the people of Assam.
The Governor observed that Brahmaputra and Barak Valley are divided over the Bill. He also acknowledged that besides political parties, social, cultural and literary bodies are also agitated over the issue.
Asked about the National Register of Citizen (NRC) issue, the Governor said credit should go to the Supreme Court which is monitoring the exercise. “The people of Assam had to face some hardship as they had to stand in line. We have to wait till June 30 when the final draft will come out,” he said.
