Twitter war over ‘Chowkidar’, PM Modi adds prefix to his handle, BJP leaders follow
GUWAHATI: In an interesting war of words on social media right ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi added the prefix ‘chowkidar’ to his Twitter handle and top BJP leaders then followed suit.
Among the leaders who added ‘chowkidar’ to their names included BJP President Amit Shah, Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and almost all top BJP ministers.
The events unfolded after Congress President Rahul Gandhi took a jibe at the PM and said ‘chokidar chor hai’ recently.
In a counter to this jibe, PM Modi took to Twitter and wrote:
“Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar. Today, every Indian is saying-#MainBhiChowkidar”
This hashtag also started trending on Twitter as the ministers and the common public also started tweeting using the hashtag.
Consequently, Rahul Gandhi replied to the #MainBhiChowkidar tweet with a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with defaulter and absconding businessmen Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya and other business tycoons including Anil Ambani and Gautam Adani. Gandhi captioned the picture: “Defensive tweet Mr Modi! You feeling a little guilty today?”
Gandhi also wrote: “You can keep trying Mr Modi, but the truth cannot be extinguished. Every Indian is saying it. #ChowkidarChorHai.”
With barely a month to go for the general elections, social media has become an interesting space which bears witness to such spats between political parties.
