The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called on the Indian authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of journalist Parag Bhuyan, who was fatally injured on 11th November last in a hit-and-run car accident in Kakopathar, in the northeastern Indian state of Assam.

The driver who hit the journalist was arrested on the day following the incident.

Parag Bhuyan, an experienced journalist of the Pra
tidin Time group, specialized in issues relating to corruption and local crime.

This comes amid reports of journalists facing issues of violence. Earlier, Milan Mahanta, a journalist, was tied to a pole and beaten up by goons for reporting on illegal gambling.

The Editors' Guild of India (EGI) had also written to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal regarding the matter.
